Social Anxiety: When Being Around Others Feels Too Much
Originally written in 2014, updated for today’s world
You Are Not Alone
Research into anxiety in today’s fast-moving world shows something important. Social anxiety is one of the most common forms of anxiety among adults, and the number of people affected continues to rise.
For many years, it was misunderstood. It was labelled as awkwardness, shyness, or even “social phobia”, which makes it sound like a simple fear. It is not. Because of this, many people have spent years asking themselves, What is wrong with me?
Let this be clear. You are not alone, and there is nothing broken or beyond repair within you.
What Social Anxiety Really Feels Like
Social anxiety is not the same as being shy or naturally quiet. It goes far deeper. It is an overwhelming fear that can take over in everyday situations. This might include eating or drinking in front of others, speaking in public, being the focus of attention, or even something as simple as entering a room full of people.
At its core, it is often a fear of being judged, rejected, or not accepted. For some, it shows up in one situation. For others, it weaves through many parts of life.
The body feels it too. A racing heart, tight chest, shallow breath, nausea, or a strong urge to escape. Some people describe feeling frozen, unable to speak or act as they would like. Others feel exhausted from constantly managing how they appear to others.
What can be most distressing is this. You may know the fear feels unreasonable, yet you still cannot override it. That can lead to frustration, low mood, and a loss of confidence over time.
Social anxiety often begins early, in childhood or adolescence, and can quietly shape the way a person moves through life. Many people seek help without fully understanding what sits beneath it.
What we are now beginning to understand more clearly is that this is not just in the mind. The body holds the stress, the past experiences, and the protective responses that have built over time.
There are many approaches that can support recovery, and each person will find their own way. For those who do not feel comfortable talking through their past or relying on medication, there are other options.
A Different Way to Find Ease
TRE UK® offers a simple, body-led approach. It allows the body to release deep patterns of tension and stress in a natural and safe way. As that tension begins to ease, many people notice a shift. Situations that once felt overwhelming begin to feel manageable. Confidence grows, not because it is forced, but because the body no longer feels under threat.
You begin to feel more at ease in yourself. More present. More able to connect.
You do not have to push through or pretend. You simply allow the body to do what it already knows how to do.
And from there, change begins.
