The Hidden Weight: The Impact of Stress and Trauma on Adolescent Back Pain and Mental Health
In today’s rapidly evolving world, the mental health of adolescents is under more pressure than ever before. One of the less visible yet deeply concerning effects of emotional stress and trauma is physical pain, particularly back pain. This article explores the impact of stress and trauma on adolescent back pain and mental health, and why schools must act now to safeguard their students’ futures.
Back Pain in Teenagers: Not Just for Adults
Back pain is not exclusive to adults. Shockingly, around 37% of adolescents report experiencing back pain, and the numbers climb as they get older. Academic demands, emotional distress, and postural habits linked to tech use can all contribute—but unresolved trauma is often a silent cause.
Trauma Lives in the Body
Stress and trauma don’t just affect the mind; they manifest physically. The body holds onto trauma through muscle tension, which can lead to chronic back pain. Left untreated, this creates a cycle of emotional and physical suffering, leaving teenagers feeling trapped in their bodies.
When Coping Isn’t Enough: Understanding Suicide
In the most tragic cases, unaddressed trauma and pain can lead to suicide. From 2014 to 2016, 595 individuals under 20 in the UK died by suicide. Many weren’t just mentally overwhelmed—they were physically and emotionally suffering in silence, with no tools to cope. In 2023, the suicide rate for people aged 45 to 54 was around 16 deaths per 100,000 people, whereas for those aged 14 to 19, it was around five deaths per 100,000 people. The reason I believe it increases with age is that the trauma continues to sit in the body, and life keeps adding to it. This is the very reason they need to heal when young, not carry their trauma into their adult life.
